Dry wood Termites
Size – About 5 to 10mm in length
Colour – Brown in colour
Damp wood termites can be found in fallen trees, dead trees and stumps. They do not nest in soil but in the dead branches of living trees. They preferred damp and moist conditions.
Dry wood termites (Cryptotermes spp)
Size – About 5 to 7mm in length
Colour – Usually pale brown
Dry wood termites can be found in furniture and antiques where droppings of pallets size droplets can be found near damaged wood. Winged reproductive will fly from an existing colony and enter a small hole in the wood and start to form up a colony. Maximum population in a colony will not be more than 3,000. Dry wood termites infest mostly on dry timbers and wood.
Subterranean termites (Coptotermes spp)
Size – About 6 to 10mm in length
Colour – Brown head with a white creamy body
Subterranean Termites queen can lay a few thousand eggs per day and can increase their population in a colony greatly. Subterranean termites are social pest and the workers work 24 hours a day without resting destroying and feeding on wood and materials containing cellulose such as carton boxes, books and card boards. A matured 20 year old subterranean termite queen can lay up to 20,000 eggs per day. Subterranean Termites depends greatly on moisture and the workers will construct mud-tunnels to travel between food source and nest.
